brian.teeman.net: Is it time for an International Joomla Event? | Across the globe - brian.teeman.net

  • Brett Hooker · 3 months ago
    J!Day international? Heck Yes!

I'd recommend an event in Beautiful Queensland!

Do it when the weather is "cooler" in the northern hemisphere and you can all pop "down under" for the event.

Have it in Queensland, which is Andrew Eddie's back yard, and we'd love to put a ripper of a show on for everyone!
  • Brian Teeman · 3 months ago
Thanks for the comment Brett. Much as personaly I would like to return to Oz espec Queensland, an event really would need to be as easy, quick and affordable for the majority of people to attend as possible.

That's one reason I was only suggesting a "european" event and not a "global" event.

Of course nothing to stop an Australasian event happening as well ;) Some of us might even brave the 24 hours flight to attend
  • Brett Hooker · 3 months ago
    haha... It's only a short trip... ;-)

The blog title "Is it time for an International Joomla Event?" threw me...

Some big regional events totally make sense... Americas, EMEA, Asia/Pac (can you see my ex-Oracle background coming out) and then I'd love to see us all build up to a Joomla!World event...
  • Brian Teeman · 3 months ago
yes that would definitely be a good plan.
  • J. Arnold Wender · 3 months ago
    This is a great idea!
  • Pete Coutts · 3 months ago
    Hi,

well I have been talking with Alex about a Three german Region CH/DE/AT about something like .. well I'ts been a while since does talks, and we in the meanwhile are both very busy
  • #guajar#9 · 3 months ago
Excellent suggestion Brian. How can I help?
  • Sascha Endlicher · 3 months ago
    Brian,

First of all, thank you for your excellent presentation!
I didn't know Fotis was driving all the way from Greece. I'll have to thank him for that personally. He has shown an incredible level of commitment. My drive happened to be a 20 minute ride. :)

I was wondering at first why Joomla!Day would be in Bad Nauheim. At first I thought you guys have an Elvis-Connection that I just never heard of before, but when I saw the list of speakers I realized how convenient this place was so that everyone could make it and Bad Nauheim is just outside of Frankfurt so that you don't have to pay ridiculously high fees for accomodation. In addition to this, I wondered how much I missed by not attending Joomla!Day in other countries.

If we put aside that I am currently in the Frankfurt area, I'd like to back up your point that Frankfurt is a very central location for a Joomla event. It's not just the geographic location and the short distance to .be,.nl and .fr, location, but the airports Frankfurt Main and Frankfurt/Hahn along with the central train station and its international connections make it easy to get to Frankfurt.

If there is anything I could contribute to make this happen, I would love to help out and give back to the community. However, I have no experience with the organization of such a real world event.
  • Andrea Torre · 3 months ago
I can help to organize a J!Event in Roma! It's not "central" but the food will make you not regret your choice... :P
  • David Deutsch · 3 months ago
Sounds good to me! From where I live (in the Ruhr area), getting to Bad Nauheim was a quick 2 hour drive (a railway connection would have been 2-3 hours). I guess for other countries within Europe, it would hardly take longer than half a day to get there, which leaves plenty of time to add another half day in front and maybe another full one in the back for discussion and pubtime.

Joomla!day Europe - now that has a nice ring to it!
  • jlleblanc · 3 months ago
I might have to use this as an excuse to get myself over to Europe for a trip... finally :)
  • Brett Hooker · 3 months ago
IF you cannot get alignment on a place to hold the EuroJoom event, then consider someone/somegroup to making a decision and then ask countries/cities to submit a nominations to hold the event. This is a popular approach used by user groups around the world. That allows each submitting group to approach local governments, universities, and sponsors to underwrite the facilities and major sessions at the event. Then, as the good bids come in, you can plan ahead a couple of years.

The mad man agrees on a pan-european event for Joomla!!! Driving to Germany was fast and fun!
  • Nick · 3 months ago
Think of Switzerland (Zurich, Basel, Bern, Geneve,...) is in the center of europe it border with germany, Italy; France, Austria. Have 3 national Language: French, German, Italian.
This are all important point that need to be addressed for an international (european) JDAY.
  • Sander · 3 months ago
Love the idea! I think it would be great. I have talked with a few other on the Dutch Joomla!Days about this topic as-well.
Picking a central point is an option, maybe it is also useful to look at statics about the estimated amount of Joomla users in the European countries and try to cover as much as possible. Eg, if we place the marker more in the South it will cover more areas of Spain and Italy, both have quite a lot Joomla users, I think more than Poland.
But I like the idea of Brett as-well!
  • Brian Teeman · 3 months ago
i chose frankfurt not as a suggestion but to explain the principle.. your comments about taking into account usage etc are valid.
  • Paulino Michelazzo · 3 months ago
I talk a lot with Ryan Ozimek from OSM and both agree that the Joomla community need an international event to share ideas and knowledgment between users that live diferent realities in their countries.

Here in Brazil we make in this month a nice JoomlaDay but some friends of the audience ask us about it; an international event. For me, a nice idea.

    Regards from Brazil
    Paulino

PS: Frankfurt is great. I love that city :-D
  • AmyStephen · 3 months ago
It's definitely time. I hope we call it an International Joomla! Developer Conference and reserve Joomla! Day for those events that are already well defined and successful.

For me, though, the most important point is that this be driven by community involvement, and community presentations. I'd love to see us do something more like how Drupal handles their International events, where the broader community proposes topics, attendees vote for what they want to attend, and there is an event where we can meet in person on a regular basis.

Now, as convincing as your map and radial imagery are, that central point can be anywhere in this round globe! ;-) This International conference needs to be in Europe, and then in Australia, and then in the newly discovered lands of the Americas, and so on. Eventually, it would be nice to see this twice a year, but realistically, thinking annually would be enough to bite off. (And, actually, your idea of having ONE makes sense, I understand your point.)

If I'm not mistaken, Brian, I believe you kicked off the first ever Joomla! Day in Leeds. It makes a lot of sense to me that you be involved in helping us figure out how to do this internationally. It will be important to involve Ryan and Alex and make certain it's a well orchestrated event involving the right mix of community members, from around the world, and that there is some thought to continuing.

Before you say it, I will, yes, we need one event before we have many. I'm in for Frankfort October 2010. That's a year from now. Let's make it happen.
  • Brian Teeman · 3 months ago
Thanks for your comments Amy. I would just like to make one thing clear. I do NOT see this event as being a developer only event or anything as formal as a conference.

Joomla, for me at least, is a non-exclusive community with everyone from developers, site builders, designers, integrators, and end users and the event should reflect that mix.

And most importantly of all it should be FUN, FUN, FUN.
  • AmyStephen · 3 months ago
Ah, we are only defining the term "developer" differently but we see it the same! I see site builders, designers, and integrators as "developers", as well. They develop sites, communities, designs. I don't mean exclusively code slingers, I mean people who get down and dirty with Joomla!, seriously Joomla people who are crazy enough to believe traveling the globe once a year (or twice) makes sense for their business.

So, agree to change the word Developer. I don't want formal, either, so if Conference says that, another word is fine. FUN, FUN, FUN driven by the *people of the community* is perfect.

    I'm on-board.
  • Brian Teeman · 3 months ago
Perhaps I am more sensitive to the fact that many of my readers are NOT native english speakers so chose my words carefully. I also did not want to be "stepping on" another event that is targeted just at coders.
  • AmyStephen · 3 months ago
Brian - Good - it's a good idea to be careful with word choice, it's important. I hope I didn't confuse anyone. I'm behind you on this and glad to see you pushing on this.

Don't walk in front of me, I may not lead

    definitely yes.

I have made a reservation for a location near Frankfurt for the next Joomla!Day in Germany. The house is perfect for such an event. Many smaller rooms and an over all capacity for 250 attendees. The best is the price, it is so cheap I haven't believed it for minutes. We get this location for 450 Euro/Day! That includes 2 big rooms and 18 smaller rooms, for this price we get the hole location. Rooms for sleeping are also very cheap. I need to check something else but I think the location fits our needs. Dates were 30 May to 1 June, that tree days. I offer this here for the international Event and we make our German Joomla!Day in September.

    Thats a great offer Robert
  • David Deutsch · 3 months ago
Count me in. Talk and everything.
  • Brian Teeman · 3 months ago
He makes one talk and now he thinks he can talk to anyone ;)
  • Robert Deutz · 3 months ago
Talk isn't so interesting but he can make very good ice cream and funny postcards :-)
  • David Deutsch · 3 months ago
Uh, but I can hold a talk about making ice cream and postcards!
  • AmyStephen · 3 months ago
OK, but, I get to review the postcards first! /me runs away giggling...
  • Bloggerschmidt · 3 months ago
Thats great news! Unfortunately I'm 10 days before on the Islay Festival, so I come to the Joomla!Day 2010 a little bit drunken, hehe.
  • Pete Coutts · 3 months ago
Great news Robert, if you need help, drop me note :)
  • Thomas Kahl · 3 months ago
Must i say "you can count on me"? You know you can.
  • hans2103 · 2 months ago
Great offer @Rdeutz... but that means that the JoomlaDays are held on Sunday 30 May, Monday 31 May and Thuesday 1 June 2010. I wonder if that would be smart.
  • joomlaxi · 3 months ago
Count me in too !! but when and where ?
  • Joomla Club · 2 months ago
This is a great idea! I would be there. If you need assitance, please contact me...
You will find a german recall for the Joomla Conference on my blog :)

Fast and cheap air travel? Define cheap. Continental bastards :)
  • Brian Teeman · 2 months ago
All I can say to that is that the flight to both joomladay.de and joomladay.nl was less than the train fare to joomladay.uk
  • Paul M · 2 months ago
And probably quicker, it took me from 9am till 19:00 to get to JDay UK this year!
  • Brian Teeman · 2 months ago
Even from where you live you could have got to frankfurt quicker
  • nowasabi · 2 months ago
Bad Nauheim was nice but it's not the heart of Europe. Years ago I attended conferences in an hotel 5 km from the Frankfurt airport. You will be there by plane, by train and by car very soon from overall Europe. You will not have a beautiful park but there also is a pub to meet at late evening. If Robert has found such a place: Perfect ! I will be there !

Hey, this is definitely a great idea. If there will be a way to travel from Ukraine (I'll need a visa) then I think I can gather Joomla developers from Ukraine.
  • Brian Teeman · 2 months ago
That's great to hear Oleg. Visas are definitely an issue and for any event to succeed we would need to ensure that the timescale allows for people like yourself to apply for visas.
  • Robert Deutz · 2 months ago
We have got a visa for Krit from Thailand for the German Joomladay, so I think this is a problem we can solve.
  • Brian Teeman · 2 months ago
It is more a case of allowing sufficient time. I know from the experience of Debian that in some cases a period of 6 months is required
  • J. Arnold Wender · 2 months ago
I could sponsor an hotel for attendees from allover the world in the near of Leipzig in Germany.

    Cheers
  • ivoapostolov · 2 months ago
The idea is wonderful and I would agree that such event would be a great success.
However, Frankfurt is a key place, being one of the largest airports for sure. But my opinion is that such an event should take place in a cheaper place (Germany is quite expensive for East Europeans), which is center of low cost airlines.
Therefore my votes would go for:
    a) Prague
    b) Budapest
    c) Vienna

All of the three are very communicative as well, but flights to there are cheaper and prices there are cheaper

    my 2 cents
  • Kristoffer Sandven · 2 months ago
    Great idea, Brian!

Germany is perfect for such an event in my opinion - UK as #2. Both countries have well established communities and experience with JoomlaDays. The Frankfurt area is centrally located and easy to get to from anywhere in Europe. I guess the event would be more of a European than an International event, but nevertheless it will be a huge opportunity for everyone.

Doing the conference in English wouldn't be a problem, I think. It would also be a great opportunity to meet all those nice people from the forums, blogs and Twitter that I appreciate so much. The Joomla Community is growing, and even though the local JoomlaDays are very nice, I believe we can learn a lot by crossing borders.

I'm booking a flight as soon as the date is set! :)

I vote for a North America Joomla! Day! ;-)
