bt.net/tinyurl would not satisfy 2. everyone knows the blog as brian.teeman.net so even if i was the only person using bt.net to generate tinyurls it would not have the same authority

1. Creating a sURL that is in my control eg won't disappear at any time in the future
2. Creating a sURL that is readily identifiable as belonging to my web site

What if... you find yourself a nice and tiny new domain.
Add this with a domain-pointer to your existing domain and use sURL.
I think it might work.

Would have been great if i had that domain but the point is that the sURL should be in your domain to be authoratitive. so I would have to move the blog there as well

Yes Dave they can do if they are real urls. but the alias tells the search engines to 301 redirect so its not an issue

sh404 does so much more than core sef. A SEF url is not just about stripping out ? and using / its about being in control of your urls

Nice tip. I had never thought of using sh404sef in that manner. Just One question Brian. You stated that "3. Create an alias (sURL) for that url (You can create more than one alias (sURL) if you want to)", I have read over and over that having the same content available under multiple url's can actually affect your search engine rankings negatively, do you know if that is true or not?

Don't know if it's really a good idea to use sh404 only to get sURL.

in my eyes sh404 slows down the webpage and do nothing else than the Core SEF of Joomla 1.5

There must be another way to get sURL without sh404 ....

My guess it is not SEO, but exposure...Twitter. Twitter is very popular and it only allows 140 characters. Twitter may change in the future and short URL services can become obsolete. All those links posted on twitter may change if the provider closes.

I think sURL is just a "cold at first snow".

In time people will forget about it. What SEO value can this bring? I mean what is the point on redirecting and routing the access to content through another additional server?
